Working completely from
inspiration, Sam Kraeger decided to make his daughter, Jessica,
the bed of her dreams. When thinking of how his daughter loved to look at the moon and the stars;
it came to him that a bed shaped like a crescent moon would be just right
for his little girl. It started out as a sketch on paper, then his idea
slowly began to emerge.

When Sam Kraeger made the
first Moon Bed for his daughter, she was barely tall enough to stand on the
mattress and hug the moon. Now eleven, Jessica is outside getting
acquainted with her new horse, Lilly, while her dad is in the barn making
beds. Somewhat shy from all the attention, Jessica feels more
comfortable dancing ballet in front of an audience than being interviewed
about the beds. Thinking back to when she was younger, Jessica just
remembers liking the moon and stars, the rest was her dad's idea.
Sam sold
his first Moon Bed to an acquaintance in Rochester, New York, who wanted
one for her child. Then he could be seen at craft fairs with a
couple of beds set up, while his daughter (dressed in her pajamas) sat on the
bed and played with her dolls. Sam works part time out of his shop in his barn
in upstate New York.
An experienced craftsman, he carves out the bed design by hand using only a
router, then chisels out the excess wood, and sands to a smooth finish.
His wife, Arlene, a native of New York City,
"absolutely loves it." Arlene, who is very artistic in her own
right, makes all the caps for the Moon Beds. "It's
a fun bed for all ages." Arlene also sews moon and star
pillows, and matching caps for the children to wear. She has designed a
Moonbed sweatshirt, and is looking into designing nightshirts too. Soon
Arlene's Moonbed children's book will be available.
Each Moon Bed is
unique, can be painted in custom colors, along with a night cap customized
to your order. The
beds are made of solid white pine, but we will gladly make the beds of another
wood depending on availability. Price will vary depending on the cost of
materials. Also available are star-shaped and moon-shaped pillows in a
fabric to match the cap. The most recent addition is a matching night
table which is shaped like a star.
